Former KITP director and Nobel laureate David Gross recognized for a lifetime of groundbreaking contributions to fundamental physics
Physicist David J. Gross, of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) and the Department of Physics, has been awarded the 2026 Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The prestigious award, often referred to as the "Oscars of Science," honors Gross for his six decades of foundational research — from his Nobel Prize-winning work on the strong nuclear force to his contributions to string theory.
Alongside his theoretical work, Gross was recognized for his tireless advocacy for basic science worldwide and his mentorship of brilliant students. "On behalf of UC Santa Barbara, I offer our hearty congratulations to Dr. David Gross on winning the 2026 Special Breakthrough Prize for his lifetime contributions to fundamental physics," said Chancellor Dennis Assanis.
