Duo honored for groundbreaking quantum mechanics discoveries
In a ceremony in Stockholm on Dec. 10, UC Santa Barbara physics professors Michel Devoret and John Martinis, along with their mentor John Clarke, officially received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. The scientists were selected for the prestigious award “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.” The event highlighted a weeklong celebration of scientific achievement and the university's leadership in quantum science.
